Temporary full-time position to establish a mass spectrometry facility at the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology at Ruhr University Bochum

Job title: “Akademische Oberrätin/Akademischer Oberrat auf Zeit“

41 h/week, salary according to North Rhine-Westphalian tariff TVL A14, 4 year appointment

The Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology at Ruhr University Bochum is establishing a mass spectrometry facility for proteomic, metabolomic and element analysis. Mass spectrometers for proteomics and metabolomics are currently operated in various groups at the Faculty. It is the goal to centralize and expand mass spectrometry instrumentation in the newly built mass spectrometry facility. A mass spectrometer for element analysis e.g. will be integrated this year.

Your tasks:

As lead scientist you will be responsible for establishing and operating the mass spectrometry facility.

·       Establishing rules governing the use of the facility, integration of mass spectrometers for proteomics and metabolomics, setting up element analysis

·       Taking responsibility for the laboratories of the facility, for the facility personnel

·       Aiding users in planning experiments

·       Performing mass spectrometric analysis and bioinformatic data analysis, contributing results to publications

·       Contributing to writing proposals for scientific instruments, collaborating across disciplines and in collaborative research projects; the preparation and submission of independent scientific proposals will be possible

·       The main focus will be the collaboration with scientists of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology. This includes aligning with ongoing and future research initiatives such as the graduate schools MiCon and MoonDi funded by the German Research Foundation.

Teaching (nominally 7 hours per week 13 weeks per semester): It is planned to integrate mass spectrometry in the Master of Science courses Biology and Biochemistry. During the facility building phase, teaching load will be reduced.

The following activities provide opportunities for further scientific qualification:

·       Funding acquisition, e.g. coordination of grant proposals for instruments

·       Independent research involving the application and/or development of mass spectrometry-based methods

·       Independent scientific publication

Your profile:

·       Doctoral degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biotechnology or related subject, demonstrated scientific independence in research and teaching

·       Deep knowledge and expertise in mass spectrometry and chromatography methods relevant to protein and metabolite analysis

·       Extensive experience in using mass spectrometry to identify proteins, post-translational modifications, or secondary metabolites and/or in element analysis

·       Specific competencies in sample preparation, qualitative analysis of specific analytes, quantitative analysis of complex biological samples, additional experience in method development and a deep understanding of mass spectrometry-related IT infrastructure

·       Prior experience in funding acquisition are a plus

·       Excellent computer skills, language skills, communication skills and team spirit
